Mayo Boys’ Kedarnath Expedition
Himalays seem to be an inviting place in the month of May, when one is facing the scorching sun and heat in Rajasthan. The snow clad milky peaks, cool breeze, and free flowing waterfalls and rivers like Mandakini, Alaknanda etc just take your heart away. The onset of summer vacations in schools is the appropriate time to enjoy the panorama of nature in the lap of the mighty Himalayas. Recently 41 boys of Junior School, Mayo College, Ajmer went on a trekking expedition in the Kedarnath region of Uttaranchal under the leadership of their Headmaster P Chaturvedi.
The average age of the boys was 10 yrs and the destination was 14000 ft high ‘Bhairon-Shikhar’. Small age mounting target. The youngest boy in the group was Kunal Gupta aged 9 years. Another member of the group was Abhyuday Tiwari, who had a history of blood cancer. But he too completed this expedition successfully.
The group trekked a total distance of 32 kms. At an altitude of 13000 ft which is in itself a great achievement. The base camp of the group was Son-Prayag. The confluence of rivers Mandakini and Son-Ganga. Scenic beauty of this place is beyond comparison. Mountain slopes were laden with pines and silver oaks. River Son-Gangha in its full might almost mesmerized the visitors. The group relaxed at this base camp and acclimatized according to the climate of the mountains. Only a little distance away was the world famous temple of ‘Mund-Kata-Ganesha’. This is the place where Lord Shiva was supposed to have cut Ganesha’s head off his body.
Next day, the group reached Gaurikund and took a bath in the hot water pool of a sulphur spring called ‘Tapt-Kund’ which possesses medicinal properties. Hence, the group commenced their expedition. To reach Kedarnath after crossing several waterfalls, glaciers and serpentine routes is a very exciting experience. Lack of oxygen in the air could easily be felt as the group reached Rambara, where they relaxed for a while.
There is a very steep ascent from Rambara to Kedarnath which is extremely difficult. This part of the trek can be done only with extreme will power and high determination. The boys continued encouraging each other with enthusiasm. Here the boys met the Governor of Uttaranchal, His Excellency Sudarshan Agarwal. He inquired about the expedition and forwarded his best wishes to the group. This generated new energy in the kids and they carried on with even more zeal.
The group reached Kedarnath in later afternoon. The entire region was covered with immense snow. Reaching the camp, after walking on snow was a dream for the students. They enjoyed a lot and threw snowballs at each other. Next day, the boys left for ‘Bhairon-Shikhar’ located at an altitude of 14000 ft. Reaching here by crossing two big glaciers and ‘Hans-Kund’ is a very risky and challenging task. The boys slid down the snow covered slopes in the region. From this peak, the entire Kedar region is visible. The valley and other peaks appear very fascinating when viewed upon from this place. This mountain is the source of five tributaries of the river Gangas. All these five rivers join each other near the Kedarnath temple. Also located between these mountain ranges is Gandhi-Sarover (Old name Chorabari) where dispersed. Just a little away is ‘Swargarohan’, a place where according to mythology, Yudishtera, eldest of the Pandavas, is believed to have departed for heaven.
In the evening, the group visited the Kedarnath temple and attended the evening ‘Arti’.
The shrine of Kedarnath is amongst the holiest pilgrimages of Hindus. It is believed that this temple was built by Pandavas. It is one of the twelve ‘Jyotirlingas’ of Lord Shiva. This temple was renovated in 8th century A.D. by Adi Guru Shankaracharya. Behind the temple, lies the Samadhi of the Adi Guru. The group visited the Samadhi-Sthal and paid their floral tribute.
On their journey back, the group did white water rafting on the river Ganges from Brahmpuri to Rishikesh. In the end, boys took a holy dip in the river Ganges at ‘Har-Ki-Pauri’ Haridwar and conveyed their thanks to the almighty for the successful accomplishment of their expedition. The teachers who were a part of this expedition include Mr Yash Saxena, Mr Paresh Mahawar and Mr Pradeep Upadhyaya.
